APA Background

The Association of Practitioners in Advertising (APA) was registered in Kenya on the 31st October, 1984 as a body representing Advertising Agencies in Kenya and other East African countries as a spokesperson and negotiator. More specifically the organisation was established to facilitate the member Agencies; in promoting the highest standards of effective advertising; in working with government and regulators in developing strong competitive media and free and responsible communication, backed by powerful self – regulation; in working with the Media on terms of business, recognition and research.

Operations

Currently the office bearers are supported by a part-time Administrator and Accountant plus a team of sub committees who champion various activities of the organisation. The mandates of the committees are as follows:

  • PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS
  • Deals with all APA matters technical and administrative including vetting new members

  • AWARD
  • Design, organize and execute award events on behalf of the Association

  • PUBLICITY AND SOCIAL
  • Ensure the image and social standing of APA is beyond reproach. To market APA as a professional body in the industry.

  • TRAINING
  • Design courses, programs, forums that build members capacity as professionals in the market.

  • KENYA AUDIENCE RESEARCH FOUNDATION
  • KARF on behalf of the industry is mandated with the responsibility of providing media practitioners in Kenya with regular media audience data which is the gold standard trading currency upon which media is valued and traded.

  • LEGISLATION
  • The committee represents APA in the industry Advertising Standard Board where emerging legal matters including disputes are deliberated.

  • PITCH PROCESS
  • To streamline the pitching process, to benchmark against creation , establishment of best practice, certain minimum norms and standards that will be applicable across the Advertising industry with regard to Pitches.

Organizational Structure

The Council

It is the highest decision making organ within the association. This organ consists of all the office bearers and such other number of representatives of full members as shall be elected at the AGM in each year.

Trustees

All land, buildings and other immovable property and all investments and securities which shall be acquired by the association shall be vested in the names of not less than three trustees who shall be full members and shall be appointed at an AGM for a period of three years.

  1. The chairman
  2. The vice chairman
  3. The secretary (to whom the Honorary Treasurer (as defined below) shall report;and each shall be a representative of a fully paid-up full member and shall be elected at the AGM to be held in each year.
